Most often, when we hear that phrase, we immediately and only think of the pro-life fight. We implore expectant mothers to choose life for their young one. We encourage the elderly to choose life for themselves and their loved ones.
This, however, is a small aspect of such a powerful command.
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days that you may dwell in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”
Deuteronomy 30:19-20
Our God commands us to choose life. He implores us hold fast to him, look to him, listen to him at all times and above all things. He begs that we choose the blessings he has given us, instead of turning away from him and chasing after the death and curses brought on by sin.
We know that God has chosen us. He chose us to be his own. He chose us to be his people. But there’s sin in the world, and it’s nasty. Many people have chosen instead to chase after sin that’s disguising itself in pleasure. God wants us to choose blessings instead of the curse of sin. He wants us to cling to him, the giver and creator of life. He wants us to listen to his Word and follow his commandments. He wants us to love him with all our heart, soul, and mind.
We are weak and miserable, and we cannot fully choose life. We will always choose sin and death. Thanks be to God for sending Jesus to loved God perfectly, obeyed God perfectly, and held fast to God perfectly for us all.
